This is a story about how I gained my ninja design skills...

 

2001 - FRESH FACED

Student Graphic Designer CornwallEager 21 year old student at North East Wales Institute of Art and Design. Studies Illustration for Children’s Book Publishing with big plans to be the next Quentin Blake.

2003 - CLUELESS

Graduate graphic designer CornwallNaive graduate ready to take on the world. Foolishly dyes hair dark brown. Mother very upset at this new look and refuses to put graduation photo on wall. Oh the shame.

2004 - BUMPY START

graphic design for booksFirst children’s book published and Heather is shortlisted to final 4 for Best New Illustrator at London's Early Years Awards. Really quite pleased with herself at this point, but struggles to make a living.

2005 - DENIAL OF THE REAL WORLD

agency graphic design CornwallDecides to try her hand at graphic design and completes a foundation course at Cornwall College. Wins a design internship in Bangkok, Thailand, and works there in a design agency for 2 months. Sneaks in a bit of travelling before returning home.

2006 - REALITY CHECK

Adobe Photoshop skills CornwallMeets a senior book editor in a damp caravan in Penzance who helps her get a job at HarperCollins Publishers in London. Becomes a Junior Cover Art Designer. Learns Adobe Photoshop to a high level. Meets Quentin Blake. Never meet your heroes.

2007 - GETTING SOMEWHERE

Adobe InDesign skills CornwallMoves to Dorset. Gets a job in a small design agency creating educational textbooks outsourced by Macmillan, Oxford University Press & Cambridge University Press. Discovers she has a great eye for detail and a love for the precision of Adobe Indesign. Becomes a book layout queen.

2011 - FINDS HER FEET

Adobe Illustrator designer CornwallLands job as a designer for Cornish clothing company Seasalt. Hones her design for print skills, utilises her past design experience to create the company’s catalogues. Learns to create graphics for web and email newsletters. Masters Adobe Illustrator and vector graphics.

2012 - BOUT OF INSANITY

not graphic designDecides to enter the London Marathon on a whim. Didn’t do enough training. Completes it in 5 hours, 29 minutes and 31 seconds. Hell on earth.

2015 - LESS FRESH FACED BUT SUPER SKILLED

Experienced graphic designer CornwallWith plenty of experience across print and web design, Heather manages her own graphic design business for a few years. But in 2015 she joins Frugi as their Senior Graphic Designer.

 2017 - FLIGHT OF FANCY
